About the ProgramThe Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) and the Center for Black Studies at Northern Illinois University (NIU) are collaborating to implement the YSEALI Academic Fellowship: Leading and Organizing for Change in Southeast Asia (LOCSEA). This five-week U.S. State Department, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs funded institute engages 21 undergraduate-level students from ASEAN member states and focuses on civic engagement from historical and contemporary perspectives. Participants will learn about important social movements in the US, including civil, labor, women’s, disability, and LGBTQ+ rights movements, and the events, methods and ideas that shaped these movements, as well as developing the skills to organize at a community level and to advocate and act for societal transformation. The newly acquired skills on civic engagement will provide a sense of empowerment and participants will develop specific action plans they will implement on return to their home countries.
